  Subject: [Slowhand] Tom Dowd documentary

The Tom Dowd documentary is worthy viewing about a highly intelligent, talented and very likeable man. The EC bits cover Dowd's contribution to Sunshine of Your Love (neatly tying the song together with a suggestion to Ginger to play the drumbeat ala Cowboys and Indians style), and the D & D Layla sessions in Miami (a completely giddy Dowd is like a kid in a candy store when he sits down at the board, thirty years later, and isolates and manipulates the pieces and parts to Layla, most notably the Clapton and Allman solos). Eric has a good several minutes of screen time (mostly in the "extras" portion of the disc) discussing his work with Dowd and EC's fondness for him. When speaking of Dowd's influence on him personally (that Dowd inspired confidence in areas EC felt were lacking), EC seems to commit a surprising Freudian slip--owning up to never having had much confidence "in my own gu/songwriting." And speaking of Ray Charles, he and Dowd share a nice little moment reliving their personal/professional relationship.

When you make it to your local media/music store in the coming weeks to gather up all of the new EC goodies, bust out a buggy (along with the credit card) and throw this one in there, too.

Hi, I'm Susan. Longtime EC fan, new to the digest. Followed EC this tour from the South to the Midwest to the West Coast, collected some memorabilia (wish I could've met a few slowhanders) along the way. I guess I was such a fixed ornament, I became the topic of discussion between EC and Nathan mid-song at the Bowl: some pointing, whispering, nodding and smiling--no, not necessarily a good thing. But I think the guitar-in-the-air salute from Nathan was a nice gesture. Had a brush with Robert Randolph in a blues club in Columbus, OH. Fourteen or fifteen years ago I had a brush with EC at a dance club in Hilton Head, SC. He was in full Journeyman mode with his long hair, denim shirt, cowboy boots. I asked him for a light (trite, yes, I know, who could think?). He smiled, nodded, and ready to oblige EC fumbled for a lighter, but his friend quickly offered his--I didn't want to bother him with a fan's inanities, so I left him alone--regretfully!

  Your friend in EC,

  susan
