The Free Post article raises a couple of interesting issues.
Although I certainly don't agree with Lawson's inference (by way of the
Dylan example) that "Sessions" may have been released "to get the bad taste
out of fan's (sic) mouths", it is interesting that that DID in fact occur in
Clapton's case in 1975, when he gave in to record company pressure to issue
"E.C. Was Here" as a response to the lukewarm chart placings for "One In
Every Crowd".
It is an unusual strategy this time around, and one which I don't believe
would have occurred had Roger Forrester still been managing Eric. For Eric
to release "M&MJ"; "Crossroads Guitar Fest" (2 DVD) and "Sessions For
Robert" all in the one calendar year is certainly a departure from past
practice with regard to Clapton's career path (anyone remember the
ubiquitous Phil Collins?). Seeing as I don't think Eric's too concerned
about chasing mega sales these days, I look upon this policy as being better
for all of us: the dedicated fans (as opposed to the casual ones). Eric must
just have been pleased enough with the sessions themselves that he decided
to expand the concept. Good on him!
Cheers,
Jon
