I've seen Eric every U.S. tour since '89. After seeing Eric in Toronto last
Sunday (Sept. 24th), I think this tour is hands down the best since NBTB in
'94, although 2004 wasn't too shabby either. Why?....
- Choice of band members - The addition of Derek Trucks, Steve Jordan and
Willie weeks was a genius move, these guys have breathed new life into the live
show IMO, basically, this is a jam band.
- Choice of setlist - Loved the addition of Motherless Children, After
Midnight, Little Queen of Spades, Everybody Oughta Make A Change, and Further on
Up the Road. These are some of my favorite EC tunes that I've never seen
performed live. Add in I Shot The Sheriff, Got To Get Better In A Little While,
Old Love (with Robert Cray), Running On Faith, Cocaine, Crossroads etc. and
you have a setlist perfectly suited for the type of band Eric has assembled.
EC's Performance... While I think EC still plays and sings GREAT, his solos
are shorter, more compact. Not quite the same as say '89-'96 when he was ON
FIRE!!! EC's content on letting Derek and Doyle take a lot of the solos now.
I would have liked to see one less guitarist on this tour, just Derek and
Eric, but hey...at this point I'll take what I can get.
If you like the 70's style jammin' with the Tulsa feel, like I do, then this
tour is for you and definitely shouldn't be missed.
Cheers,
Jon
