Ron,
Based on EC's remarks regarding SRV and his brother, I believe that he respects Jimmy MUCH more as a guitar player. I've noticed that, several times, when interviewed about SRV, EC switched the topic to positive comments regarding Jimmy (so he wouldn't have to speak ill of the dead?).
I also believe that SRV had great technical ability, but needed a lot more maturing as a guitar player. When I first heard him, I was impressed. After a bit, I tired of his playing because it seemed mechanical, repetitive, and "show-offy." On the other hand, although Jimmy isn't the technical speedster that SRV was, he's a better "storyteller," which is what EC actually respects. And besides that, I do think Jimmy has the chops, but like EC, he keeps 'em in reserve and concentrates on the storytelling rather than the gymnastics.
Finally, whenever asked, SRV was always in awe of his older brother's guitar playing.
