Thanks for that Kevin, that's the most lively and interesting post here for ages.
When I first read it, I thought you were taking the p*ss about the Robertson box set and you'd made the whole thing up. Then the penny dropped that there really was such an animal!

But come on, you've got to have a bit of compassion for these old guys. What with the GFC still raging, the downturn of CD sales due to downloading and er, piracy, they just aren't making the returns they made in the good ol' nineties. So by necessity they have to release 14 different versions with assorted rare tracks on each to encourage all of us to contribute to their pension funds. It's only fair.

And to describe Robbie as "a bit of a toss". Hilarious.

Cheers,
Jon

What exactly is being released next month?

There's a CD for $16.26 at Amazon.com & £8.99 Amazon.co.uk - release date 13
& 12 Sep, respectively.

There's a CD+DVD (WEA/Rhino) for $13.12 at Amazon.com - release date 13 Sep.

There's a CD at Amazon.co.uk for £14.76 (2 discs - 10 tracks and 11 tracks
[1 by Taj Mahal only] apiece on the U.K. listing) - release date 12 Sep.

There's an Japanese Import (say what???) for $36.99 at Amazon.com & £35.99
at Amazon.co.uk - set for release around 27 Sept.

Is there anything of Clapton's that doesn't take financial acrobatics to get
in a complete set these days?

There's been a lot of discussion around the Clapton/Robertson collaboration
recently. My view is that the album is well produced and mastered, but
nowhere near as great as the self-titled "Robbie Robertson" album, which was
a joy to hear from the first listen. Any guitarist could have done Clapton's
contributions on "Clairvoyant" - just as competently, cause that's all they
really are. In fact, the best guitar work is by pedal steel guitar
wonder-boy Robert Randolph on the opening number. I put on the demo tracks
CD first and my initial thoughts were "what a load of crap". Depression,
depression, depression.

As mentioned elsewhere, it's questionable whether Eric appears on the demos.
With that in mind, can anyone tell me if Eric actually plays on the demo
version of "Won't Be Back" found on the Japanese imports, or wait for it...
"How to Become Clairvoyant Collector's Box Set" featuring:

* How To Become Clairvoyant CD [12 tracks]
* Bonus CD with 10 additional tracks [2 EXCLUSIVE new tracks, 6
songwriter versions and 2 outtakes]
* 3 180-gram clear vinyl LPs containing the 22 tracks from the album
and bonus CD
* DVD containing 3 multitrack files ("When The Night Was Young" "He
Don't Live Here No More" and "This Is Where I Get Off") from the How To
Become Clairvoyant album.

Oh, the price tag is $302.80 - now I'm no cheap-skate, but this is
ridiculous. Looks like Eric told Robbie what his company was doing with the
Layla box set. Robbie then thought, "Hmmm, good idea, I'll simply triple the
price of my box-set." Always thought the guy was a bit of a toss.

Kevin
