DUANY TEAM TO MAKE PUBLIC PRESENTATION SAT. NOV 4 6PM AT THE BROWN TENT

The Miami architect/planner, Andres Duany, and his team have been meeting
with the
Parish Planning Commission, Office of Community Development Director, and
Parish Council over the past few months and will make a public presentation
of site-specific suggestions for implementing a vision for
St. Bernard which was presented in their 2005 report as the culmination of
the public charettes.

Using the principles of smarth growth, the Duany team was asked by the
Planning Commission to focus on a specific area bounded by St. Bernard
Highway, Paris Road, the 40 arpent canal, and the Chalmette Vista Canal.
This area of central Chalmette includes Nunez College, the former Chalmette
Hospital, Village Square,
Chalmette Middle School, the shopping strip that had the theater, etc.
They were asked
to demonstrate how their overall vision could become a realistic plan by
taking a closer look at
this area for a start.

If you would like to see what they come up with, please join in a public
meeting to be held
this Saturday at 6pm at the brown tent north of the parish administration
building. The planning
commissioners, office of community development, and parish admin./council
have seen a preview and
I must say there are exciting possibilities and potential opportunities to
bring our community back
stronger, with more amenities, and greater quality of life than would have
been possible before the
storm.

There are many challenges, issues, changes in ordinances, codes, laws, etc.
that are necessary to
make the transition from paper to bricks and mortar. But we have to start
somewhere. Be a part of
the starting point. The principles and ideas presented can be applied to
other neighborhoods throughout the parish, while being unique to the
history, character, and culture of each area.

Even if you don't live or own property in this specific area, it's an
opportunity to explore how some of these
ideas could be brought to your section, especially in areas where properties
are being demolished and
there is an opportunity for improvement.

Deborah Keller
Planning Commissioner At Large East
Chair Strategic Land Use sub committee
