Rep. Baker announces $501,000 in grants to Southern University and Louisiana State University

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Richard Baker, R-Baton Rouge, joins the United States Department of Education today in announcing $501,000 in grants to Southern University and Louisiana State University . Southern will receive $231,000 and LSU has been granted $270,000.

The grants, part of the Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Program, are designed to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds and can be used for academic counseling, financial aid assistance, research opportunities, seminars, mentoring, internships and tutoring.

“These grants will provide valuable resources to Southern and LSU as they advance their commitment to providing educational opportunities to disadvantaged students,” stated Rep. Baker. “It is incumbent upon us as public servants to assist deserving students as they pursue higher education within our state universities, and I am excited about the opportunity that these grants will provide students in Louisiana .”

The McNair program is one of eight TRIO programs administered by the U.S. Department of Education. TRIO programs are targeted to assist low-income, disabled and first-generation college students as they progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs.
