1.  The wood, and it can be quite a harsh teacher, since each project has created more than its fair share of firewood, and kindling.
 
2. Self Taught, though I wish I could travel more to pick up some pointers from classes and some of the fine people on this list, I have a few of the say nothing books...  suggested to me by non carvers before "Ol Don" suggested I connect with this list after connecting with him on another list.  It would be a dream to turn this into a professional enterprise, so I could get out to shows, and develop my craft, and make people happy, as many of the fine carvings I have seen bring some measure of joy into my life through a love for the craftsmanship, and skill exerted upon our favorite medium.
 
3.  Started too late, but yet I am still young.  Retired by Heart Surgery, and other physical incapacity, but overall I wish I had started in my youth, and spent my life pursuing a craft that I now love so much.
