Hi Tom,

Thank You!

Good questions, Yes I do all the patterns myself, wouldn't have it any
other way! Sources of inspiration for my patterns come from a very wide
variety of sources...books, we have tons of books around here and I
suppose I could say that books have always been my prime and favorite
sources of inspiration!

Long before my interest in carving began I worked for many years as an
teacher in the ceramic and in the general hobby and art field, and
during these many years I had to create patterns and designs for the
projects that I would teach to my students. During this period I kept
every scrap of inspiration I think I ever found! I have several huge
industrial sized file cabinets just stuffed full with drawings,
sketches, magazines, magazine clippings, photos, newspaper ads, old
calendars and all manner of source material, this is lovingly refereed
to as a 'artist's morgue'. All those wonderful things that one simply
never had time to carve, draw, paint, woodburn...ect!

Books, magazines, the internet, nature itself, art, photos, calendars,
greeting cards, newspapers, furniture, architecture, rugs and textiles,
advertising are all great sources of inspiration! I guess what I am
saying is that sources of inspiration has never been a problem for me, a
bit overwhelming at times to be sure as I see so many projects and ideas
everywhere, and I want to do so much of it!

And our customers have never been shy about suggesting new themes over
the years! Many of the patterns that we offer are direct results of
themes and ideas suggested by our customers! My to-do list of pattern
ideas/themes is growing larger all the time, I fear that I'll never have
time to do all of the patterns folks have ask about!!

Time to carve!? What's that? Been far to busy writing new books and
running our businesses! Maybe this summer!

Many thanks for your comments re. how you learned to carve. I
enjoyed reading it and it was most enlightening. I always like to know
about folks from whom I have bought things, etc. Makes it seem more
personal somehow.
And now a question or two if I may. Do you do all of the
patterns for sale on your site? There are so many, I wouldn't think it
possible for even one or two people to have done them all. If not all,
how do you find them? No, I am not asking for specific sources so I can
order from there and beat you out of your business. Your exact sources
are your business, but I am just curious about how you gathered all of
these.
With running your business, how do you find time to carve
now? I'm retired and have a part-time furniture repair business and do
some custom woodturning and seem to find time for that and my carving
tends to take a bit of a back seat to that, other than when I must carve
something on a piece of furniture, etc.
My biggest weakness is painting what I carve. I must have a
dozen pieces in my shop that are finished, but not painted.
Again, my thanks for taking the time to relate your carving
experience.
            My best,
            Tom
