Hi Reddogg,
I believe the law since 1-1-78 is that copyrights now last the life of the
author plus 70 years.
Since 1989, published works--even without formal copyright notice--are
protected the life of the author plus 70 years.

The copyright is in effect as soon as the work is given shape (written out
on paper or put into a computer, etc.) Now days the copyright is automatic,
not subject to formal registration, or even a notice. Even unpublished
writing is protected. Many writers use the "poor man's copyright" before
publication by putting a page or two into an envelope, mailing it to
oneself, and keeping it on file unopened. The stamped date on the envelope
establishes time of writing, in case there is a dispute of authorship. It
isn't an iron-clad method, but it is helpful evidence in a dispute.
