Hi Clive,
Depends on how big the log is, what position you want to hold it in and what
type of tools you're carving it with. My log mantels are over 35-lbs and
rest in a cradle, without any clamping, to hold them in place while I use a
mallet and chisel to carve them. They just lay across the top of my bench.
You'll have to tell us more if we're going to be more help to you.
