Hi Clive and possibly Sue McG;
Well wasn't that a bit of luck, Greg Wilkerson posted a message that
invites you to look at his workshop, and low and behold he has a shot of a
"carver's arm" in action, look on the right side of his web page a little
more than half way down, see "Carvers Arm:.(G)
http://www.wilkersonwoodcarving.com/myshop.htm
BTW I hope Greg doesn't mind me reposting his web url.
Now in your case Clive I would suggest that the arm be bent "back" over the
bench at about 45 degrees rather than pointing "out" away from the bench as
Greg has it shown, and then the log can lay back almost flat or be raised
up to 90 degrees with the log secured to the "carver's arm" from the back
with a carvers screw or a lag bolt .
A little hard to explain in a few words but the arm can be used as Greg has
shown with the screw into the end of the piece to be carved or as I suggest
with the piece laying flat on the arm.
Also I'm not sure wether it's the arm that Sue McG wanted to hear about or
the carving that Clive was doing, maybe she can explain further.(G)
