Hi Merrilee,
Why is the face carving jig so long? Very good question.
The way I understand it, the fellow who originally made it used it for
carving 3 and 4 foot cigar store Indians. With all the "spacers" removed it
has about a 6" throat, making it possible to hold a log about 12" wide. I
have used it in the past to carve faces on 4 foot log bed posts.
I put the "spacers" on the jig to give some backing to the split logs I
carve faces in. I added the boards underneath the log to give me a base to
secure the logs. Since I carve on several different lengths of logs I use
the small 2 x 4 blocks as shims.
All in all, the jig is fairly adaptable for carving all kinds of things. I
have even used it to hold large panels for relief carvings.

Hi Greg!
After looking at your shop again - I am still am amazed at how good it is
layed out. Looking at the face making jig I have a question. And I'm sure
it is not real inte;;egent but why is it so long? I think I see several
planes - layers of wood below the face - isthat just a "holding spot for
the wood you are carving on or just holding additional wood? My "shop" in
my basement is far from here! Someday...
