Merrilee if you fill a bag about half full with sand and tie the end you 
can then lay it on the bench and wriggle your piece down into it. You will 
be suprised how firm it is and it will hold up to a fair amount of belting 
from a heavy mallet. The stone carvers use it all the time as they can't 
put stones into a vice.
