[Woodcarver] tool holder

Hi Doug,

Soft steel does not retain magnetism like hardened steel. All our carving
chisels are hard steel and will retain magnetism when coming in contact with
a magnet. There is no way around keeping hardened steel from becoming
magnetized when coming in contact with another magnet. Demagnetizing is the
only solution to keep metal particles from sticking to the magnetized tool.
The strongest attraction would be right at the fine cutting edge so that
would be the greatest collection of metal particles. These metal particles
would be between the cutting edge and the wood resulting in a high
probability of breaking down the cutting edge. Also these metal particles
would be rubbed off onto the wood ready to dull the tool on the next cut and
even rust on the wood degrading your finish.

Machine shops have demagnetizers for a reason. Their tools sometimes become
magnetized just from use and need to be demagnetized.

I don't know why that carver doesn't have trouble. Maybe just lucky? Maybe
he needs to resharpen more often than necessary and thinks it normal? Maybe
his buffing compound melts enough to capture much of the metal particles so
most don't say attached to the cutting edge? I have no idea why anyone would
take a chance with magnetizing their tools.

In any case keep magnets away from your carving tools. Once one tool becomes
magnetized when it comes in contact with another tool it will magnetize that
tool etc... Magnets and good quality tools are not compatible.
