I have a life size rough-out of a Red-tail hawk in wild cherry. I am undecided about using glass eyes. Since I want to finish it natural, I am concerned about setting them (don't want the putty, or epoxy, to show). It is a dramatic piece and I believe the glass eyes would be great. I do have some questions about the post on setting them.
"Glue a SMALL piece of foam rubber in the base of the eye
socket. Then a few drops of GEL super glue (careful not to
get any on the exposed wood)"
How do you determine the size of the foam? Does it need to be a minimum depth? Cover the whole bottom of the hole? Round or square? I assume this determines the depth of the eye. Is this all that holds the eye in the socket? How do you determine the focus of the eye? Will the foam keep it from moving?
Love the suggestion of the brass rod. I am going to make a couple of these for setting eyes. Much better than fingers.
