Hi Paul n all,
I put the foam (or clay) in the hole to better guage the depth of the eye when it is permanently glued.You don't want the eye to deep or not deep enough.  Once you do glue it, its to late...LOL 
I use GEL super glue as it does fill in slight gaps and sets rapidly.  5 minute epoxy 
can also discolor the natural finish, as will super glue, so be very careful.
