hi maura,
honduras mohobany is one of the best mohagonies to carve. it is absolutely  beautiful for detail and sculpture or relief carving. it also finishes well..  it carves beautifully, enjoy it with hand tools, it will be delightful for you to carve and see the shape come through. then the finish , if your want the grain to come to the surface,,, i oil it with tung oil ... several coats, when tried after a few weeks, then wax it and it mellows into a wonderful patina that grows deeper incolour and patina.

  I have come across a couple of peices of some nice honduran mahogany and wonder if it is good carving wood.  Can I hand carve it or should I power carve it.  is it good to use for a relief or better for in the round type things.  What would be a good finish to highlight the grain?   any other info on working with mahogany would be appreciated.  thanks
