Rezuma,

Welcome to our group. I am also an IT pro, as are many carvers I have met. I
support inbound and outbound transportation systems, and a Supply Chain
Demand Planning application for PBF(Pepsico Beverage & Food) here in
Chicago. I am still in the early phases as well, but will offer whatever
useful advice I can. The best woods for learning are Basswood, and
Butternut. Your local Home Depot will think you are crazy if you ask them
for it. Same for the lumberyard. If you have a hardwood specialty shop in
the area, give them a try. The best I can recomend is to go to
http://www.carverscompanion.com, save this page as a favorite so you do not
have to retype it all the time. From here you have multiple options:

1. Click on the E-zine link to go to an incredible on line carving magazine
filled with examples, inspiration, and humility
2. Click on resource Files link and explore the following:
    A. New Carver File
    B. Vendor File - sources for tools and wood
    C. Any and all other links - you can spend a day digging through all the
information

Finally, find a store or club in your area that holds classes or clinics, or
better yet, take a week off in June and go to the Woodcarvers Roundup in
Evart, MI. One full week of free classes, seminars, and meet many of the
people on this list. Check this link:

Good Luck,
Daniel Heine
