Thanks Joe. The General Outside Finishing Oil I used to seal the carving
and cut the artists oil colors has UV and mold protection. I'm not sure how
stable artists oils are when exposed to sunlight so I've been looking for a
protective spar varnish. Most spars are high gloss but I was able to locate
a spray spar varnish in satin made by BEHR at Home Depot; havn't tried it
yet. My present dilema is with a 3/8" thick white oak beading frame (sort
of like a cock beading on a drawer) I want to apply around the outside of
the carving. I'm afraid this "protective hard case" around the carving will
act as a moisture trap and actually cause the basswood to rot from within.
Is it possible to seal, caulk, or somehow prevent this moisture from causing
a problem?
