Hi Larry,

You don't need a spar varnish. An indoor/outdoor oil-based polyurethane
varnish will work just fine. They come in semi-gloss and satin as well as
gloss.

If you do use the gloss spar varnish you can buy a deglosser and add some
into the spar gloss to make it less glossy.
