Hi Brad,

I would not use sewing machine oil or any other type of lubricating oil.
Lubricating oil tries to reduce friction by keeping a film between the stone
and the metal. This will make you work harder to get your tools sharp
because you'll always be fighting that film. Use honing oil. If you don't
have honing oil you can use mineral oil but honing oil is best. Don't use a
vegetable oil or any other oil derived from food products because it will
become rancid.

Hello fellow carvers,

        I just bought a new carving stone, one side rough th other smooth,
 I wasWondering how to condition it, can i use a light coat of sewing
machine oil on the smooth side or would this ruin my stone? any input would
be gladly appriciated.

    FOR MY TWO CENTS WORTH.  THE BEST TOOLS I HAVE FOR CLAY IS THE SET OF
TEN ON MY HANDS, NEXT IS A LENGTH OF MONO FISHING LINE TO CUT THE STUFF, AND
THEN A BUNCH OF WOOD TOOLS I SHAPED FROM SCRAP HARD WOODS TO WIGGLE AND MOVE
THE CLAY ABOUT.  I HAVE ALSO MADE SOME BY FORMING STIFF WIRE WITH A TOURCH
AND ATTACHING TO A HANDLE.  COST NOTHING TO SPEAK OF BUT PLENTY OF ENJOYABLE
