I tried to post earlier, but had some problems with my e mail. So, will try and send it again.
 
If the ironwood that you have came from the east it is probably hornbeam or hop hornbeam (called muscle trees in some areas because of the convolutions in the trunk). The ironwood to which I referred is very similar to the mesquite tree and grows in the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona and New Mexico. The wood is very dark and the rings can be difficult to distinguish.
 
I had 12 assignments as a Park Ranger (all over the country) and how the local names (espcially plants and flowers) changed never ceased to amaze me. For instance in southern Indiana bell pepper is known as mango and in the southwest "jumping cholla" is whatever cholla is the dominant local species. Thank heaven for scientific nomenclature (especially concerning the dangerous ironwood).
