Sandy,
Minwax Pre-Stain Wood conditioner or the equivalent should help even it out. Of course this is for use w/ oil base finishes...

Hello,
I hope someone can help me with a question about staining. A fellow carver
has relief carved a plaque and has rounded off the edges. She was wondering
if there is a way she could stain the whole piece without the end grain
edges taking the stain darker than the other edges. She would like the whole
plaque to take stain the same shade. Any help would be appreciated.
