[Woodcarver] Staining help

Hi Sandy,

All the answers you are getting will work to get even staining results on
end-grain to side-grain. With the sanding sealer the end-grain is partially
sealed to minimize the soaking in of stain deeper than the side-grain. The
other solutions, with the higher viscosity stains, is it reduces the
capillary action in the end grain making it lay on the surface the same as
the side grain. I have good results by adding clear varnish to the stain
making the stain higher viscosity to minimize the capillary action of the
end grain.

A dye stain is low viscosity and made to soak in the wood. In a carving the
end grain will take much more low viscosity dye stain through capillary
action making it look blotchy against the side grain. A pigment stain is
higher viscosity and may to lay in the surface so the end grain and side
grain have about the same color. Drastic color changes with a pigment stain
will look like mud lying on the wood surface, so I recommend only slight
color changes for a more natural look.
