Probably not completely, but she can try a stain blocker, which might
help marginally. I think Minwax has a stain blocker and I know
McCloskey, which I use. Basically what a stain blocker is is a stain
without any pigment in it.
What could work a bit better would be a wood Filler, tinted with the
same color stain she will be putting on it. Tint the filler, rub it
in good and let it dry. Sand it down. May be best to put the filler
over all the piece.
