Try a de-waxed shellac.  I mix 50/50 with denatured alcohol, let the wax 
settle to the bottom of the glass jar and use the remaining shellac at the top a 
sealer.  Two or three coats usually works.  A sanding sealer may also work.

Try it on a piece of scrap wood first.

Gel stains will probably be your best bet also.
