I love to carve chains, My picturetrail site has a photo of a cross and a chain. I can send you detailed instructions off list just let me know.
Here are some tips. I like my chain links to have a smooth rounded finish so when separate a link I use a small file to round them out. The links I carve are about half an inch wide so I have to strengthen them with Krazy glue. The glue soaks into the wood quickly (I will continue to apply the glue drop by drop until it stops soaking into the fibers)just don't glue your fingers to the wood. The glue will act as a sealer so you will not be able to apply a stain on top of the glue, so if you want to apply a finish do that first. Remember you want the glue to soak into the fibers. The glue will slightly darken basswood and give the appearance of a clear poly coating.
I hope this helps
God Bless,
JohnG
