Hi Bing,

As I live on the only Indian Reservation in Alaska that is full of Native
Art carvers,
every totem pole I have ever seen then do is painted first.  As they use a
Western
Red Cedar log that is full of it's own preservative, they give the totem a
touch of
Thompson's clear waterseal.  They use an acrylic colored paint, normally a
red and
black with the occasional use of blue and green.   These guys are masters as
I've never
seen a bad totem from them yet.   Their names can be found all over, David
Boxley Sr
and his son, The Horne brothers, Jack Hudson, Wayne Hewson.....
