Hi Bing,
You have a very nice site at www.darkwood-woodcarving.com . A great resource
for carvers and those interested in purchasing carvings.
For the paint for the totem, I would seek professional advice from a good
local paint store in your area. They know best your local weather conditions
and the local species of wood in your area and how it holds up to
weathering. I can't tell what type of wood it is from the picture but some
types of wood, like redwood, will last longer if not sealed tight and
allowed to breath and dry out. If it is a pine I would recommend an oil base
paint. A good exterior grade, high quality, oil base paint in the enamel
family. I would take the manufacturers recommendations for the type of
primer and how many coats. The knowledgeable paint store should know the
type of wood, moisture content of the wood and where it will be displayed.
If the wood is the type that needs to breath than a good exterior latex
paint might be best.
If it is pine I would install it totally above ground fastened to a concrete
or metal mounting system anchoring it to the ground, leaving plenty of
distance between the ground and the wood to minimize bug infestation.
