Hi Cynda and Lloyd,
There is a big advantage to what Lloyd said about having your own domain and
being able to move it to a new ISP. If you do any advertising and want to
get people to your site, and don't have your own domain, when you switch ISP
's you need to start over with advertising your new URL. You like to tie
your business email address to your own domain so your email address always
remains the same. I have had my own domain and the same email address for
more than 10-years. I'm registered with
http://www.register.com/transfer-registrar/tr_step1.cgi Register.com and
they have given good service is a timely manor the 4 times I changed my ISP.
The down side of having your own domain more spamers pick up your address
and the spam builds. I have found the filters that block spam have also
blocked some important business emails. Other spam filters, where you delete
the spam before you download it also take lots of valuable time. I get about
300 spams a day. If I'm too quick with the delete key I, once in a while,
delete an important message.
The other downside of having your own domain is the registration costs, I
think about $20 per year, and a fee to your ISP for hosting your web page.
Also you are excluding ISP's such as AOL who offer some very good web
services.
