[Woodcarver] Question about wood

Hello, I'm new here and new to carving.  I've been having a great time reading the messages and viewing everyone's websites.  I have a question about wood I hope someone can answer.

Is basswood softer than aspen?  I have been working with basswood as a beginner but have aquired a "blank" that is made from aspen.  It seems to carve alot easier and nicer than the basswood.
