[Woodcarver] Question about wood

Holly:
I started out many years ago carving in aspen when I lived in central Canada. I didn't know any better and it seemed OK at the time. The wood I used was kiln dried and I think it would have been better air-dried. When I got hold of my first northern basswood, I almost cried with joy. There is a lot of variation in both aspen and basswood. If you've got some good aspen, go for it but for my projects (figurative stuff), I prefer northern basswood.

Hello, I'm new here and new to carving. I've been having a great time reading the messages and viewing everyone's websites. I have a question about wood I hope someone can answer.

Is basswood softer than aspen? I have been working with basswood as a beginner but have aquired a "blank" that is made from aspen. It seems to carve alot easier and nicer than the basswood.

  Thanks in advance!!

  Holly
