About 20 miles west of Portland is a man who does chain saw craving, he is 
very good.  Oregon doesn't have a lot of good carving wood unless you can find 
some nice red cedar or want to tackle Myrtlewood.  The Myrtlewood is very hard 
but very pretty when finished.  You can check out the World Forestry Center up 
by the zoo, is usually has a wood related exhibit of some sort.  If looking 
for wood check out Gilmer Hardwoods at 2211 NW Saint Helen's Road  503-274-1271 
they usually have a scrape barrels priced cheap.
