Hi Barney and everyone else interested in helping out with a cane
segment. I will respond on Joe's behalf -

Cane segments are typically 2" x 2" x 3" high with a 5/8" hole the
long way. They may be basswood, butternut or whatever else you
want to carve, finished in any way you desire.

The block size is not hard and fast and could vary a bit larger if you want.

Hole size, however, is pretty specific - the hole should be 5/8" (or
11/16" if you can find a bit long enough.) If you must drill the
segment from both ends, hole alignment is critical - please make
sure a 5/8" dowel will slide smoothly thorough your segment BEFORE
you start carving. It can be very difficult to re-drill a finished
segment.

If you need ideas for a cane segment or would like to see some
samples, visit the W3E Friendship Cane Exchange page at

then on the Friendship Cane link.

Carve On!
Matt
