Thanks for posting the specs. Matt.  I missed Joe's original post like 
Barney did...Gremlins, I guess.  This is good information so we don't 
have everyone going off in all directions.  I'm sure everyone wants to 
help out.

Cane segments are typically 2" x 2" x 3" high with a 5/8" hole the long 
way.    They may be basswood,  butternut or whatever else you want to 
carve, finished in any way you desire.

The block size is not hard and fast and could vary a bit  larger if you 
want.

Hole size, however, is pretty specific - the hole should be 5/8" (or 
11/16" if you can find a bit long enough.)   If you must drill the 
segment from both ends,  hole alignment is critical - please make sure 
a 5/8" dowel will slide smoothly thorough your segment BEFORE you start 
carving.   It can be very difficult to re-drill a finished segment.
