You are absolutely right, Dicky! (Did I say that?)
Most big box stores, (Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, etc.) carry an
imported dowel made from a wood called Ramin. The tolerances on those
dowel varies considerably. The stores that supply woodworking folks
(Woodcraft and others) usually carry a higher grade of dowel, generally out
of birch. That's what we used to handle when we were into the woodworking
end of the business. Those were consistently the size they were supposed
to be. FWIW.

Joe,
It appears that all 5/8 dowels are not created equal... I bought some, from
two different supplires,
and some of them won't go into a 5/8 hole while others are a (rather) loose
fit. Maybe Matt's
suggestion for a 11/16 hole may be a better soultion. (??)
