Hi Loren,
John Griscti picked up on my last post and sent me an article on the
hazards of wood dust which is different than toxicity. I really
appreciate it.
As I said, we are a new carving group. Began Sept. 03 and have 18
members now. We needed to set some guidelines. Some people think that
it's just "fine" dust and not enough to hurt anything. The finer the
dust, the more hazardous. I read two articles from Chip Chats that
were sent to the Editor: July-August 2003 and Nov-Dec 2003. Most folks
don't read the editorial letters but these were warnings. We all know
the one about spalted wood that reprints quite often but these letters
were to the editor.
Anyway, I need to educate our group on health issues and truly
appreciate this list and the help all of you have offered. If you have
further articles on breathing dust or woodburning fumes etc. please let
me know.
Thanks
Sally

Sally:
Probably the biggest reason for no power carving in your free classroom
is
dust. We had a power carving class in the local Vo-Tech school and
another
in a church. We were allowed to have standard carving classes in the
public
places but can no longer have power carving classes. We used dust
collectors, etc. However, you just can't control the duct in that type
of
setting. We almost lost our free meeting place because of the dust.

I think this issue (toxicity) has taken care of itself pretty much.
Our new little woodcarving club (9 months along) has 18 members now.
We meet in a school classroom with no charge to us. The topic has
arose a few times about allowing power carving in that setting. I was
detering it for various reasons...dust, allergic reaction, noise
pollution, etc. So I armed myself with valid information and presented
it to the club for discussion. I think it has taken care of itself.
We want to be able to socialize, we do not want to wear masks, we do
not want to be disrespectful to our most gracious host allowing us to
meet for "free." etc, etc.
