John,
Welcome to the list. For a rotary tool, I would suggest buying the best
quality tool you can afford. Foredom makes very high quality tools, as does
Proxxon, Wecheer, and several others. As far as burs go, for rapid wood
removal, I like the Typhoon carbide burs and the Kutzall. Both come in
coarse and fine. I have also had good results with stump cutters, carbide
end mills, and carbide shaped head burs. I would suggest contacting Larry
Yudis at wdcrft at revealed.net, ask him to send you a catalog, and go from
there. At the http://www.carverscompanion.com web page there is a link to an
online wood carving magazine, tutorials, vendors and manufacturers of
carving tools.
