clive,
you are talking about live bacteria .... unless you have a place where the air is collected as in a dust extraction plus good complete mask filter, do not work with spalted material it can float around you and others . the only way to work with it, safely in my opinion is under water so that the material does not fly in the air and gets into your lungs or someone elese's. am not trying to scare you just reality.
best wishes
maricha

Hi all,
Wondering about the dangers of carving spalted wood. I have collected a few logs from the mother in laws yard and when I started carving one it was quite badly spalted. So I put it aside to dry for a bit and then began wondering about the dangers associated with this. I know about the dangers of turning this kind of wood due to the dust, so it started me wondering.
Thanks and take care all.
Clive.
