[Woodcarver] WALKING STICK QUESTION?

Harry.....first of all WALKING STICKS vary depending on the height of the person.....36 inches (9002 mm)....is common....including the handle....but you would be better off finding a current cane that your grandfather has and use that measurement.....if you are going to make it a permanent cane, the handle should be fitted with an 8 mm threaded insert and use a 50 to 75 mm threaded rod that is glued into the cane shaft.....I would recommend a BRASS ferrule where the handle and cane come together to make a nice finishing touch

hi everyone,
can anyone advise me on what the correct thichnesses and lenghts of a proper walking stick should be?
is birch a good material for it?
any advise?
this is going to be my grandfathers xmas present,lol. handcarved handle.
he broke 3 ribs last week and has been in hospital for a week now. on top of that he has a pnuemonia. 90 years old.
