FWIW
Salt brine is an old method used to heat-treat tools/knives. Salt was
stirred into cold water until it no longer disolved (saturated solution)
some used boiling water until the salt would no longer disolve
(super-saturated solution). This was used for quenching/hardening the steel.
Haven't heard of anyone using it lately. It left stains on the tool that had
to be removed & the tempering was done in oil.
