David,
Mike and I are so delighted that everything worked out well for you at
your club!!! As I was working on that particular pattern for the
Sailboat Tutorial I knew it was perfect for a levels project. Which, of
course, being a woman not of few words at all, lead into the long
step-by-step we have posted to our site. Being strictly a relief carver
I think in levels any more both in my carving and in my patterns. So
again, we are glad that we were able to add a little to the Yorarvers
Wood Carving Club's meeting.
If you are interested in the levels techniques you might like to stop by
the site as see:
Simplifying a Pattern into Basic Areas, page 1
http://www.carvingpatterns.com/projects/macaw.htm
has a free Macaw Pattern
Simplifying a Pattern into Basic Areas, page 2
http://www.carvingpatterns.com/projects/levels.htm
has a free Canoe Bear Pattern
Sailboat, Basic Carving Techniques Tutorial
http://www.carvingpatterns.com/sailboat/sail-introduction.htm
has the free Sailboat Pattern to which you referred.
As a note to others on the digest that are members of carving clubs,
senior citizen's wood groups, or wood carving newsletters, Mike and I
often share our work through you to the wood carving community. If you
are interested in using one of our free patterns or some of our articles
on our site please drop us an e-mail to request permission to use it at
your club meeting. Let us know what you want to use, where it will
appear and something about your particular group's interests so we can
contact you about it. Please remember our website and patterns are
copyrighted, so you need to ask first!
Oh ... David ... PS ... If some of your students get finished projects
of the sailboat done I would love to see them!!!! Do the Yorkarvers
have a web site where you could post them???

Susan,
I agreed to lead a 1 hr seminar for our club on relief carving. I made
2 landscape
carvings from patterns from your Landscape book previously and am
currently working
on another one from your book. In preparation for last Sunday's
seminar, I reviewed
your on-line tutorial on relief carving using the sailboat picture. I
used that
picture, copied it for each club member and had them color in the 4
distinct carving
levels. It was a great eye opener for most of them as they never
thought of your
method of defining the various levels in a relief carving and then
numbering each
sub-layer.
Thank you for your step by step tutorial as it gave me lots of
information to give to
the club. I also passed out small blanks and had them try different
forms of texturing
by using a gouge / V-tool and rocking it back and forth while pushing it
forward.
You really saved the day for me and it gave my club a basic idea on what
relief carving
is. Since your web site is on the picture I handed out, I hope some of
them will
visit it.
Thanks for your help,
Dave Andreychek
member of YORKARVERS wood carving club in in York, PA.
