Pete dips in boiled linsed oil tinted with raw sienna
oil paint, which gives the wood a yellowish color
something like pine. He doesn't wait for the oil to
dry, he just rubs off the excess and then starts
painting with his watered down acrylics.
The paint will cover much more evenly - the end grain
is more or less filled with oil, and the acrylic seems
to "float" on the surface. The paints will not run
less. It helps to score or undercut between one color
and another to help avoid the paint going to an
adjacent area.
After painting, he lets everything dry for several
days before finishing with wax.
