Reddogg has you heading in a good direction with Irfanview.  I downloaded it
a couple of years ago and use it every so often.  It will open almost any
kind of file someone might send you.  Will resize and has a good greyscale
to make patterns of pictures. (Something you might also be able to use)  Yes
it is a free program.
Give it a try it will do what you need.  If not send the picture to me and I
will cut it down for you.
