[Woodcarver] When should a carving be retired from competition?

Yes, they are......but I believe it is going to be a while yet before the 
little shows catch up to the big shows in the way of entry.

Don't forget.....some people make their living with their carvings.....and 
the more ribbons, best of shows.....the higher the price they can charge.

So getting a North American standard might be a while off.
