i am sorry for my bad english, but what does "checking" mean?
i am just not completely sure.

have not tried pentacryl, does it affect the timber in any way, perhaps discolour it or makes it toxic?

I have used Pentacryl many times when carving green hiking sticks. If I am not going to finish the carving in one sitting, I will cover the area with Pentacryl. It keeps it from checking.
