Hello Sally and David:

Thank you for your 2 cents on the 2005 Carver's Conference. I would have
like to meet you while I am there. Infact, I would like to meet as many of
you who subscribeto the List. I've been told woodcarvers are the greatest
people with the best personalities. Sally, can you tell me what other major
carving events are happening this year? Thanks.

Hi all,

I just received my book Wood Spirits and Green Men by Susan Irish,
Chris pye and Shawn Cipa & Clive Hicks.

This is a subject I'm fascinated with buy never did the research.
THANK YOU for doing that. I had no idea there were so many different
classifications of these guys and gals. I do have some idea of the
amount of effort that went into this research. When there is a
history, I feel it is important to preserve it. It brings a passion to
the carver that makes his work more meaningful. You've done a great
job here.

The patterns and photos are easy to follow. You guys (and gal) did a
super job.

Thank you for the book and the amount of research you put into it.

Hello Mark,

We attended the International 2004 Carver's Conference. We were
demonstrators in the Resource Center so didn't attend classes. We feel
it was an overwhelming success. Everyone coming through had the same
look on their faces...rather awestruck. You know the mouth slightly
open with a half grin. Like seeing a lighted Christmas tree. All of
the comments we heard were positive, I mean VERY positive.

There were shuttle buses transporting people from the building where
the classes were held to the Resource Center and vice versa. Even the
bus drivers came in to take a peek. They heard stories and saw the
excitement so came in to see for themselves what was going on. They
couldn't believe it either.

2004 was the first year for the Conference and you would expect
something to go wrong, even if minor. Not in this case. I don't think
there was a gliche with anything. It was very well organized and
thought out.

We are very sorry we have another engagement preventing us attending
2005 Carver's Conference. We know we're going to miss out on a grand
event.

Just our 2-cents worth.

I'm seriously thinking about attending the International 2005 Carver's
Conference in September. This trip would be the first event of this
nature I would be attending. As I mentioned when I previously
introduced myself, in Trinidad we do not have any wood carving
associations. I've never even seen a woodcarving magazine in a
bookstore.

For those of you who would have attended the Conference before, I would
appreciate if you can share your experience with me. Are any of you
attending this year. This would be the first time traveling outside of
my country and could really use the moral support.

Feel free to e-mail me directly.

For $14 a year you can join the National Woodcarversr
Association and you get Chip Chats magazine. The
magazine itself is worth more than that.

Their web page is http://www.chipchats.org/

Hi Mark,

Mike suggested Chip Chats which is good. That deals with local club
shows, classes etc. It's a good way to get to know the carvers & their
style of carving. In the back of each issue you'll find several pages
of upcoming classes (when, where and who is teaching them) as well as
upcoming shows (dates, location, contact person). It's quite complete
and informative.

Another thing you might be interested in is Carving Magazine
www.carvingmagazine.com
They do an excellent job with carving projects and articles for all
levels of carving skill. You can find all information on their web
site. Browse through back issues, projects, etc...even have a forum.

Another magazine is Wood Carving Illustrated
www.WoodCarvingIllustrated.com
They offer carving projects and a slate of show events as well.

Others on this list are more knowledgeable than I but try these for
starters.

Good luck

Hi,

I have a few basswood goose eggs to carve Santa heads. I laid out my first
one
and it came out well. I started a second one tonight and realised that I
didn't
know if you should center the face on the edge of the grain, or with the
flat of
the grain, or doesn't it matter? (I started this one on the flat of the
grain)

So, for all you basswood egg carvers, what is your preference for laying out
faces on eggs with regard the to grain?

Thanks, Vic H

After my kids left home I do as I please also. My cleaning for company is

It is best to put the front of the face on the edge of the grain. That
makes the nose stronger and less likely for the tip to flake off and also
avoid target-like grain effects on the cheeks, etc.

Vic
I would agree with sir Alex. I follow this same method for carving anything
in the round if possible. I did deviate on a 19" full figure Native
American and the grain pattern allowed me to highlight the different parts
of the anatomies.

We have a door magnet on the fridg that reads, "PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH TOP OF
APPLIANCE.
Important dust-settling measurement in progress."

Hi All!
I finally got caught up with my on going 10 day compilation of emails! I
probably should have deleted them but I was afraid that I would miss
something very important! If I had I would not have known about the
International Carvers Convention. My question is: where is it being held
this year and is there a site with information? It is time to start looking
into new things to see and do. Thanks for your help!
Merrilee
