[Woodcarver] Airplane travel

I am going out of town for a few days and wanted to take a few knives and 
a block of wood with me.  I am not sure where to pack these items.  I 
assume that I can not take them on a carry on.  But I assume that I can 
pack them in my suitcase that gets checked.   Is that correct?
