Bill, I have an old Sears 12" band saw with many miles on it.  Sounds like 
your shaft or bearings are worn, maybe just a loose nut or bolt needs 
tightening.

I have replaced or re-built the lower shaft on mine four times.

I'll try to check the top bearing on mine and get back to you tomorrow or
